I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a B.S. degree in Microbiology and a Chemistry minor. I also have a Master’s degree in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health. My interest in genetics propelled me into a career as a laboratory technologist for over twenty years. Most of that time, I worked as a certified cytogenetic technologist in a clinical laboratory setting. I loved my career choice; however, it came to a screeching halt when I broke my back in 2009. I was no longer able to work full-time, so I began to write…and write…and write. I am now an official author, and I am loving it!

In addition to my lab career, I was also active in dancing. I started to dance when I was only four years old and continued well into my 20’s and 30’s. I have taught ballet, jazz, ballroom, and aerobics. One of the most enjoyable things that I did while dancing was choreography. While in school, I was active in many theater productions and other dance productions, and watching my choreography come to life gave me so much satisfaction. I was so happy in the dance studio and on stage. Needless to say, dancing also halted for me in 2009 which has been one of the hardest things for me to accept. Although I am unable to dance the way I used to, I have learned to enjoy it by watching theater productions and other dance shows.

My first book was written at the insistence of some friends that I worked with at the lab. They tasted some of my homemade herbal teas, and they thought a book on my tea mixes would really take off. I decided to try, really not expecting much. Maria’s Mixes: A How-to Guide on Making Your Own Herbal Teas was written in 2011, and to my surprise, it has sold quite well. This propelled me into writing more books, mostly non-fiction.

I continue to write as much as my back lets me, and I enjoy it so much. The book I am working on now, Estill County: The Foothills of Appalachia, is based on the life of my grandfather. So many stories of this family have been shared with my family members. Some of these stories are hilarious while others are heart-wrenching, and altogether it makes an incredibly amazing story. I hope that the readers will enjoy it as much as I am writing it.

Thanks for checking out my page! Come back often for updates!
